Workshops Now Open for Registration

Leland will be offering four workshops in the Summer of 2025. All workshops take place in and around Missoula, Montana.

Workshops will run with as few as one person, and at limited to six participants. Once six people have paid, a waitlist will be started, and people will be notified in the order they were added to the list of any cancellations. If there is sufficient interest, a second session will be offered.

Landscape Photography workshop
June 28 – 29, 2025

Spend 2 full days learning how to approach landscapes as photographic subjects. Participants of all ages and all levels of experience are welcome. All you need is a camera — film or digital (though phone cameras are not recommended and a tripod is highly encouraged). This workshop will cover a lot about lenses, lighting, composition, filters, and exposure, as well as general best practices for photographing on locations in Montana. One day will be spent in the beautiful Mission Valley north of Missoula, and the second day at some of my favorite river sites in the Bitterroot Valley.

Large Format Photography Workshop
July 12-13, 2025

This is a 2-day workshop that will take place in Missoula with an optional third day to learn how to develop black and white sheet film yourself. The first day will be a deep dive into using the large format camera. Understanding the advantages, and limitations of these cameras, as well as learning how to load/unload film, focus, work with large format lenses, and adjust movements to achieve your vision. You will learn how to handle and prepare sheet film for use and development, but this workshop will not cover film development in the 2 days. If you also want learn to process your own sheet film, a third-day session can be scheduled on July 15th in my studio darkroom where I will teach you how to develop black and white sheet film on your own. If you own a large format camera (4×5, or 8×10) and are looking for a crash course in how to use it, this is the workshop for you. If you don’t have a camera but really want to learn, Leland may have an extra camera you can use, so inquire.

Developing Large Format Sheet Film workshop
July 15, 2025

This is a perfectl one-day follow-up to the Landscape Photography and Large Format Photography workshops being offered. Learn to process your own black and white film.

Covers everything you need to get started developing your own black and white films. Whether you shoot large, medium formats or 35mm this one day crash course will teach you what you need to know about film handling, and working with photographic chemistry.

Cyanotype printing workshop
August 8-9, 2025

This 2-day workshop in Missoula will introduce you to the Cyanotype process, and get you all set to print both photograms from found objects, and photographs from negatives. Covering the entire process, you will learn how to mix your own emulsions, how to coat paper, and fabric, and how to expose and “develop” your prints using the sun as a light source. There will also be a demostration of cyanotype bleaching and toning to ensure your creative ideas are fully unlocked.
