David Allan Cates is a wonderful and original writer. I’ve had the good fortune to get to know him in recent years, and so last week I invited him to sit for a portrait. As usual, I shot a mix of digital and film, mostly 8×10 and 4×5 black and white. Here are a couple of images from that session.
For those unfamiliar with David and his writing, I suggest starting with his first novel, Hunger in America and his excellent collection of poetry, The Mysterious Location of Kyrgyzstan. His other novels are (in no particular order) X Out Of Wonderland, Ben Armstrong’s Strange Trip Home, Freeman Walker, and his most recent, Tom Connor’s Gift.
I am grateful to David for his writing, his friendship, and his willingness to sit in front of my camera on a Friday afternoon.
