Aslaug Holm interview for the Mamalode Podcast
Yesterday, I went looking to see if my interview with Ondi Timoner for the Mamalode Podcast was still accessible. I also found this interview I did with Aslaug Holm. I thought I should add it to this part of the website. The interview was conducted over Skype, which is never a great solution for recording, but it was what was available. I was in my basement in Montana, Aslaug was in her apartment in Oslo, Norway. I recall the time difference put her at the computer doing the interview late in the night.
At the time, Aslaug was busy promoting and traveling with her 2015 film “Brødre” (English, “Brothers”) that had screened at over 50 international film festivals in 30 countries. This was one of only 12 episodes of the Mamalode Podcast, and even now (in January 2025) this interview stands out to me as one I was really fortunate to do. Like all the episodes of this podcast, the set up was minimal, the recording remote, and the edit and mix done very fast. It was very DIY. I’d not listened to any of these episodes in years, so finding them on Soundcloud was a treat.
If you aren’t familiar with Aslaug Holm, I highy recommend Brothers, a documentary about her two sons growing up. Brothers won numerous awards, including the top prize at the 2016 HotDocs Film Festival in Toronto. She continues to make powerful and engaging documentary films including a film about the Norwegian band A-Ha that came out in 2021, another 2021 film about four women who survived the 2011 right-wing terror attack at Utøya Island which killed 77 people called Generation Utoya. Aslaug is a director, cinematographer and editor with a strong voice and strong visual style.
