Photos from The Beargrass Writing Retreat, August 2017
This weekend, I attended the Beargrass Writing Retreat in beautiful Greenough, MT. It was the third year of the retreat itself, and the third year I was able to attend. This year, while I listened and talked to the many talented and fascinating writers in attendance, I made it my primary objective to photograph the event and this year’s Beargrass Writers. The writers I was able to photograph include Ameila Gray, Jack Driscoll, Pete Fromm, Sharma Shields, Brad Watson, Smith Henderson, Callan Wink, Kevin Goodan, Holly Wren Spaulding, Tyler Dunning, Daniel Rice, Chris Dombrowski and poet/troubadour Jeffrey Foucault and drummer Billy Conway.
Portraits are something I’m taking a strong interest in lately, particularly when they are live-action portraits in natural light. Asking a person to sit, in a controlled pose under controlled lighting is one way to get a good portrait. Capturing a subject in a non-posed, natural light situation is an entirely different process.
Most of the images posted here were taken on a Sony A7sii with either a 70-200mm f/4 zoom, a 10-18mm f/4 zoom or a 50mm f/1.8 prime. My standard kit these days consists of this Sony a7sii with the 10-18mm and 50mm lenses. Occasionally I rent a longer lens like the 70-200, or an 85mm prime. I always carry and shoot a Canon G7x and my iPhone 6 as well. When Shooting with my iPhone, I often use and Olloclip wide angle lens attachment. I “process” all the images in Lightroom and Nik Silver EFEX Pro 2
